Rei Shito can usually be found scouring the streets of the Japanese capital for fashion-forward looks. This month, however, she catches up with one of her favourite photography subjects…
Rei says: “This is KiNG, a talented Japanese artist/designer/producer/fashion collector. She’s known for her unique customisation of vintage clothing from Gucci, Chanel and other designer maisons, using her original inspiration to transform the pieces with additions like distinctive buttons, tribal motifs or even her own drawings. Her creations are so conceptual, that’s why I like her!
“I caught up with her at a showing of her designs held at Royal Flash, a cool shop in Harajuku. She’s wearing her original army coat with a Gucci cap and pants (Gucci is one of her favourite brands to use and wear, she says). Her shoes are Timberland – the result of a collaboration she did with the brand in 2012, resulting in premium 6-inch boots that work in both casual and more formal settings.
“She always mixes her own sporty and relaxed style with luxury items for a look that’s wild, functional and authentic all at once. Her mixture of aesthetics is a typical Japanese approach, while remaining totally original, and there’s a sense of power in the creations she’s wearing in the photo.”
